Lasix (Generic)

Generic Lasix (furosemide) doesn’t let the body absorb large amounts of salt and helps it pass into urine. The medication can effectively treat fluid retention (edema) in patients suffering from liver or kidney diseases (nephrotic syndrome) and congestive heart failure, as well as high blood pressure.

Generic Lasix should be taken according to your doctor’s instructions and directions on the prescription label. Do not change the dosage or period of use without prior medical consult. An increased dose of the medication may lead to irreversible hearing damage.

DO NOT use the medication if you are allergic to it. If you experience any symptoms associated with allergies such as difficulty breathing, hives, swollen tongue etc., stop using the medication and seek urgent medical help.

Contact a medical specialist immediately if you experience any of the following: hearing loss or ringing in your ears; loss of appetite; dark-colored urine and clay-colored stools, reduced urination; yellow-colored skin and eyes; severe upper stomach and back pain; nausea and vomiting; body pain and numbness; rapid weight increase; chest pain, difficulty breathing or cough; bruising and bleeding, pale skin; increased heart rate, trouble concentrating, light-headed feeling; low potassium (unsteady heart rate, muscle weakness, discomfort in the legs); low calcium (muscle contraction or tightness, increased reflexes, tingling in the mouth area); headache; skin reaction with high body temperature, swollen face and tongue, skin pain, burning sensation in the eyes, purple and red skin rash in the upper body with peeling and blistering.

Common effects of using Lasix include: digestion problems and stomach pain; dizziness and spinning; moderate itching or skin rash.

Note that this list does not include all possible side effects. Other side effects might occur depending on individual health conditions.

Do not get up rapidly after taking the medication as it might make you feel dizzy.

Ensure proper hydration, consuming only the liquids advised by your doctor.

Notify your doctor in advance if you have any medical conditions such as enlarged prostate, urination problems, kidney disease, an electrolyte imbalance, cirrhosis or other liver disease, gout, high cholesterol levels, lupus, diabetes or an allergy to sulfa drugs.

Make sure to tell your doctor of recent MRI procedures or other scanning procedures with the use of a vein-injected radioactive dye.

Notify your medical specialist about other medications you are taking, especially: cyclosporine (Neoral, Gengraf, Sandimmune); phenytoin (Dilantin); laxatives (Metamucil, Colace, Dulcolax, Senna, Epsom salts, etc.), ethacrynic acid (Edecrin); cisplatin (Platinol); methotrexate (Rheumatrex, Trexall); antibiotics as amikacin (Amikin), cefprozil (Cefzil), cefdinir (Omnicef), cephalexin (Keflex), cefuroxime (Ceftin), kanamycin (Kantrex), gentamicin (Garamycin), neomycin (Mycifradin, Neo Tab, Neo Fradin), streptomycin, tobramycin (Nebcin, Tobi); lithium (Eskalith, Lithobid); heart or blood pressure medications benazepril (Lotensin), candesartan (Atacand), amiodarone (Cordarone, Pacerone), enalapril (Vasotec), eprosartan (Teveten), lisinopril (Prinivil, Zestril), losartan (Cozaar, Hyzaar), irbesartan (Avapro, Avalide), quinapril (Accupril), olmesartan (Benicar), ramipril (Altace), valsartan (Diovan), telmisartan (Micardis) and others; steroids (prednisone and others); salicylates such as Disalcid, aspirin, Dolobid, Doan's Pills, Tricosal, Salflex and others.

Other medications may interact with Generic Lasix as well.

If you have missed your dose of Generic Lasix, make sure to take it as soon as possible. However, two doses should never be taken at the same time, so if the time for the next dose has almost come, DO NOT take the dose you have missed.

Generic Lasix should be stored between 68°F and 77°F (20°C and 25°C) away from light and moisture, and out of reach of children and pets. Storage in a light-resistant container is strongly recommended. If exposure to light causes discoloration of tablets, do not proceed to take them. Do not store the medication in the bathroom.
